Mac OS X 10.5.x Leopard+HP Scanjet 3400C howto

// June 2nd, 2008 // Mac

This is an updated mini howto from my previous post Mac OS X 10.4.x Tiger+HP Scanjet 3400c howto: GREATNESS! :D .

The process still the same but you need newer files for Leopard. You can check and download the leopard version of libusb, sane backend, and twain sane interface here or by following the procedure.

1. Download the following applications:

libusb
sane backend
twain sane interface

2. Extract and Install the applications downloaded:
Extract all 3 apps

And install the apps at this manner:
libusb

sane backend

TWAINE SAINE Interface

3. Restart your Mac(I don’t know why but that’s the way to make it work)
4. Now run image capture.app and scan whatever you want to scan

To me it keeps complaining that I need MAC OS X 10.5 SDK when I try to install sane backend. Any hints?

  4. Mark says:

    @Paulo,

hmmm… it never asked me that, but i don’t quite remember if i installed the twain before i installed SDK(i need it to install gcc and compile some stuffs like asterisk for mac). nevertheless try to install sdk if you really need too it’s around 1-2GB anyway not that big. :)

I can now preview what’s on the scanner bed… but I can’t actually scan the object. I know I could just do a screenshot but I am trying to get a high resolution scan. The actual scan button is innactive/greyed out just like in your screenshot. Anyone have a fix for this?

    Gracias, Gracias, Gracias…

  30. Donatus says:

works nicely, but the scan button does not get activated.
It’s only possible to get the overview.

  31. Mumu says:

I have the same problem as Mark T., michael and Donatus, the “scan” button is desperately grey…. and I can’t scan. Anyone to help ?

  32. Mark Q. says:

    @Mumu and @donatus

you need to select the area you wanted to scan before the scan button will be enabled. :)

  33. Valentina says:

Thank you very much. You’re the guy who helps us keep our cyber trash (like old scanners…)… :)

  34. Bruce B says:

GREAT! I’ve been having to scan to my old PC and then sharing the file across the network ever since I got my Mac. No luck at all looking for drivers from HP. I loaded these three programs, hooked up the scanner and it works. Didn’t even have to restart my Mac as noted above.

I’m getting Snow Leopard next week; I hope it will keep working then.

    Thanks for sharing this.

  35. Jean-Pierre Trudel says:

Thank you very very much Mark. Merci beaucoup. It worked very well with Leopard OSX 10.5.8.

In French, the “Image Capture” Application is called “Tansfert d’images”, not to be mixed up with the French “Capture” Application which is only for the screen capture.

I am new with mac (2 days) and this is the only place where I had hesitations.

Best regards to you and to your brother from which you got your old Scanjet 3400C.

    JP

  36. David says:

If i update to snow leopard… will it work?

    thank you very mach!

  37. Darrin McCormick says:

Way too cool! Saved a scanner and me (from having to scramble!)

    Works flawlessly for me!

    Thanks!

  38. Enrique Pavia says:

Tried it on SL 10.6.1…but Image Capture never finishes scanning… it does recognize the scanner and it even shows the scanned image, but as i said it just shows the scanning message without finishing..

Is there a way to update the backend with a newer version.. as i do not see the 3400C in the prefpane.??
All the info available apply only to Linux….
Thank you, you gave me hope again.. i was ready to sell/give away my old scanner from the days i used windows. Lets pray for an update!!

  39. barbara says:

  43. Robert says:

YOU MADE MY YEAR! I hate the fact that HP is so Anti-mac. I guess its because mac people dont like their bloated spyware on their systems.

  44. Mark says:

i have upgraded to snow leapord mac os 10.6.1 and now after the SCAN preview is correctly displayed from the HP 2355V, pressing the SCAN to create the tiff file generates 2 tiff files (scan1.tiff and scan2.tiff) instead of one file like it did before the upgrade. Any ideas on how to generate one tiff file with the entire scanned image?
